James Palumbo turned his club Ministry of Sound into a global business empire, but with his aesthete’s lifestyle and aversion to debt, he couldn’t be further from the image of the hedonistic tycoon. Afterwards the crowd will be split into groups and will receive a master class on mixing with a set of decks. Nation1 is hosting this event in association with the Entrepreneur's Organisation.
Speakers at this event included:
James Palumbo (Founder, Ministry of Sound)
After leaving Eton in 1980, James spent a gap year in California where he established his first business with old school friend Humphrey Waterhouse. The Etonian Butler Service provided domestic services to Hollywood celebrities.
James went on to found Ministry of Sound with Humphrey Waterhouse and DJ Justin Berkmann. The club was an immediate success. Modeled on the New York City club Paradise Garage, Ministry of Sound is a globally recognised brand. In 2001 James sold 16% of the business to 3i for £24million. He remains the majority shareholder and is involved in the development of the company.
In addition to its portfolio of clubs, Ministry of Sound is the largest independent record company in the world, has a radio station, IPTV, hosts live events and produces a range of clothing and merchandise. In 2008 Ministry of Sound rebranded to MSHK Group to reflect the purchase of music brands Hed Kandi, Global Underground and Euphoria. During that year the group’s turnover was around £80million, and the business currently employs almost 500 personnel worldwide.
